According to the American Meteor Society, a meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors pass through the Earth’s atmosphere at very high speeds and in parallel trajectories.

Meteor showers occur throughout the year with different periods and names, such as Orionid, Taurid, Geminid, Ursid, and others. The meteor shower whose peak will occur tonight is the Leonid meteor shower.

What is the Leonid Meteor Shower?

Quoting NASA, the Leonid meteor shower is a meteor shower that occurs every year and reaches its peak in mid-November. The Leonid meteor shower runs from November 3 to December 2 2023, with a peak on November 18.

Even though the meteor speed is only around 15 meteors per hour, the Leonid meteor shower is considered the largest meteor shower. At its peak, the Leonid Meteor Shower will display hundreds to thousands of meteors per hour and is called a meteor storm.

1966 was a spectacular year because observers could see thousands of meteors per minute traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere over a 15 minute period. Since then, the last Leonid meteor storms occurred in 1999 and 2001.

Leonid itself is a bright and colorful meteor. This meteor moves very fast at a speed of 44 miles (71 kilometers) per second. Therefore, Leonid is also considered one of the fastest meteors.

How to See the Leonid Meteor Shower

Reported by the Jakarta Planetarium Instagram account @planetariumjkt, the peak of the Leonid meteor shower will occur on November 17-18 2023. The peak time for the Leonid meteor shower is 00.21 WIB to 05.00 WIB at the radiant point of the constellation Leo.
