Summer is currently showing its best side once again – hot temperatures and lots of sun included. So it’s important to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Anyone who longs for a little, healthy refreshment in their everyday life will most likely reach for the popular summer fruit, such as watermelon.

But did you know that you can save money when buying fruit? A Lidl employee reveals online what you should definitely pay attention to in order to avoid spending more on watermelons, plums and the like.

In the video we reveal another simple Lidl hack:

The Lidl trick: THIS is what a Twitter user found out!

We’ve all been there: When you buy loose fruit or vegetables, an employee at the checkout weighs them to determine the price based on the weight. It’s not uncommon for the fruit or vegetables to roll around, making it more difficult to weigh.

But now comes the crux of the matter: If cashiers clamp the watermelon or similar under the cash register to prevent it from rolling around, you pay the increased price for it, as “the branch manager” reveals on TikTok.

If the fruit is made to lie still with the help of the cash register, the scale will show more weight, which in turn results in a higher price.

“Important for you: The watermelon must never be trapped underneath,” explains the TikToker, adding later in the clip: “When you go to the checkout, always make sure that the items are floating freely.”

But that’s not all: you can also save a few cents with this trick when buying fruit bowls that are weighed at the checkout.

If you have two or even three bowls of plums, strawberries or the like in your shopping cart, you should pay attention to the following: “This must never happen to you at the checkout: the cashier must never weigh both bowls at once,” explains “the store manager”.

The reason? The cash register deducts the tare weight from the weight of the bowl. If both fruit bowls are weighed together, you will only be reimbursed once for the tare weight for two bowls. So ask the cashier to weigh each bowl individually in order to be reimbursed for the tare weight per bowl.
