Renewing plastic products using improvised means is not so difficult

The appearance of yellow plaque on plastic is due to two main groups of reasons: internal and external. Internal problems are associated with a violation of the structure of the material due to its poor quality or improper care.

Harsh detergents or abrasives can destroy the top layer of plastic containing the dye, resulting in scratches, yellow or even brown tints. In such cases, it is often impossible to get rid of defects and the plastic product has to be replaced.

The reasons for color changes due to external factors are more varied:

  1. Exposure to direct sunlight, which often leads to yellowing after 5–6 years.
  2. Exposure to a humid environment and temperature changes is especially typical for garden furniture.
  3. Exposure to grease leading to deposits on countertops and other kitchen furniture.
  4. Exposure to smoke from smoking, soot from candles and incense sticks.

Yellowness may also appear on the plastic surface of electronics and household appliances due to the attraction of dust and dirt particles during operation. Keyboards, remote controls and phones can collect greasy particles and wear out during use.

If the yellow coating is caused by external factors, you can often successfully bleach the plastic at home, but you should exercise caution and first test aggressive products on inconspicuous areas of the products.

Yellowness from fat and soot on plastic can be effectively removed by using dish detergent or laundry soap. Apply detergent or soap suds to a stiff sponge or brush and scrub the dirty areas thoroughly. Then rinse with warm water. It is important to wipe the surface dry as wet plastic attracts dust, rendering your efforts futile.

To bleach yellowed plastic you can use different types of alcohols. Plastic does not react chemically with them, so there is no danger of deformation or damage to the material. To check for safety, wipe an inconspicuous area with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol. Choose any alcohol available to you, such as ethyl or methyl alcohol, and wear personal protective equipment in a well-ventilated area.

Yellowness and other contaminants can be removed from plastic using bleach containing chlorine. However, it should be used with caution, avoiding use if you are prone to allergies. This method is especially useful for cleaning small items that can be soaked in a bleach and water solution. After this, everything should be thoroughly rinsed with clean running water and dried, using rubber gloves if necessary.

Small plastic items can be bleached by immersing them in soda solution. Dissolve soda ash and laundry detergent in water, then soak the plastic parts in the water. The proportions can be maintained by increasing the volume of water as needed. Plastic products should be left in the solution for about ten hours or even overnight for more effective cleaning.

Hydrogen peroxide, available in every home medicine cabinet, can also serve as a bleach. Simply apply the solution to a sponge and wipe the plastic thoroughly. It may be necessary to repeat the procedure several times to achieve the desired result.
