How to reset your AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max

You can open and close the case, nothing to do, your iPhone no longer recognizes your AirPods Pro. Both headphones are well in your ears, but the music only comes out from one side. Your helmet at 629 € perfectly reproduces your favorite songs… when it stays connected for more than ten minutes. These symptoms are often a sign that you should reset your AirPods.

Reset AirPods or AirPods Pro

Whether you own AirPods, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, or AirPods Pro, the reset procedure is the same:

  • place the headphones in the charging case;
  • close the lid and wait about 30 seconds;
  • open the cover near your iPhone;
  • go to the section Bluetooth Settings app, then tap the icon (i) next to the name of your AirPods;
  • touch Forget this device, then confirm;
  • with the cover still open, hold down the “configuration button” on the back of the box for fifteen seconds;
  • When the status light turns orange and then turns white again, you can release the button.

The status light is inside the original case of AirPods and AirPods 2, but outside of cases that support induction charging, such as AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro. You can then reconnect your AirPods by opening the cover near your iPhone.

If you can’t reset

Status light never turns orange? The two headphones must be stored in the case, or sometimes, one of the headphones is not recognized. In this case, you have to distinguish between a temporary problem or a permanent failure. Clean your AirPods, paying special attention to the contacts at the bottom of the case.

Take out the earphone that works, and recharge the box, hoping that it manages to recharge the faulty earphone. With a little luck, after a big half an hour of charging, you can put the functional earpiece away and reset your earphones.

This problem of sudden earphone discharge seems particularly common with the first frost. Batteries suffer from cold, and the power controller may worry about extremely fast discharge or unusually difficult recharging.

Despite your best efforts, you failed to resuscitate the faulty earpiece? Before making an appointment at the Genius Bar, check that the problem does not come from the box. If you have to plug it in to reset it, then its battery is probably giving up the ghost.

The reset will only be a temporary solution: you will have to replace your earpiece or your box. In the event of a battery problem, Apple charges € 55 for a new earpiece or a new box. These costs are covered by the AppleCare + insurance contract.

Reset AirPods Max Headset

Before resetting your headphones, you should restart them, holding down the noise control button and the Digital Crown until the status light turns amber. In most cases, this is enough to resolve all issues.

If you had to use the hard way, however, hold down the noise control button and the Digital Crown for about 15 seconds. When the status light turns orange and then turns white again, you can release. You can then reconnect your headset by holding it near your iPhone.
