Black streaks on the floor that are impossible to remove: you know them. Fortunately, cleaning expert Marja Middeldorp has the tip to remove them with little effort. “I always have that stuff at home.”
Black stripes on your floor, door or skirting board are an eyesore in a clean house. “So recognizable,” Marja sighs. “They often come from rubber soles. There is no way you can get rid of them with plain soapy water. I have my own cleaning methods, but I always look on the internet to see if there are any new remedies. So I came across a very special way to remove them. I read that if you cross the line with your heel in the opposite direction, it also disappears. I would solve that differently,” she laughs.
The solution is lamp oil or gasoline. “If the stripes are on painted wood, I always use lamp oil. Why? That is a bit fatter than gasoline and less aggressive. For example, using petrol, matt doors can become a bit more stained. Also nice: lamp oil is not expensive and is available at household chains and even in the supermarket. I always have it at home.”
How do you remove the stripes?
To remove the streaks, you need a few things besides lamp oil. “Cotton or an old rag that you can throw away afterwards, soapy water, a soft dry cloth and possibly a cotton swab. It is also wise to wear household gloves. I always do that because I have sensitive skin. Just make the effort, because you often don’t know how you react to this stuff.”

Marja puts a little lamp oil on the old cloth. “Dab it on the line you want to remove. Then you let it soak in for a while. Then go over it again with the same old rag. This time don’t dab, nor scrub heavily, but just wipe off a little. In the line of the line, so don’t go around in circles or anything. You will see that the rubber has softened and you can easily wipe it away. You can remove remnants of stickers in the same way.”
Now that the streak is gone, you still need to clean and degrease the area. “You can do this with lukewarm water and a little washing-up liquid,” Marja tips. “That degreases well. Then dry it with a clean, dry cloth. And then you can look at your floor or door with great satisfaction.”
Different approach for a tiled floor
If you have black streaks on your tile floor, it is best to use cleaning fluid. “That is a little more aggressive and less greasy. It also dissolves the rubber well.” Marja does have a warning. “Be careful with fire. Gasoline is very flammable. And also keep it away from children.”
The method with gasoline is the same as with lamp oil. “First dab, let it absorb and then rub in. Then apply soapy water over it and wipe thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.”
Gasoline to prevent stains on clothes
“What detergent is also useful for is staining clothes. For example lipstick. So dear men, if you have lipstick on your collar and it belongs to another woman, make sure you have cleaning fluid at home. With gasoline you can get rid of it in no time and you can get home safely.”
Rinsing is not necessary, because gasoline evaporates. You can simply hang the garment to dry

You can also easily remove stains on silk scarves and ties with cleaning solvent. “Just roll it up and put it in a container. After fifteen minutes, take it out again. Rinsing is not necessary, because gasoline evaporates. You can just hang it to dry.”
Remove chewing gum
Finally, Marja has a nice tip for removing chewing gum. “You know that, especially with small children. Chewing gum that ends up on the floor and is chewed up. You can try to remove that with a knife, but I have a better solution: peanut butter. You can do that with cheap ones. Apply peanut butter to the chewing gum with a spoon. Peanut butter is greasy and does not run off. It makes the chewing gum soft. After a few minutes you can scrape the chewing gum off with a spoon and throw it in the trash.”
