In 2021, general practitioners diagnosed Lyme disease 25,600 times in patients who came by with a red circle or spot, the RIVM reports. This is comparable to the number counted in 2017. That was the last time it was surveyed. How can you treat a tick bite and how can you prevent it.

First the most important. Have you been bitten by a tick? Then make sure you remove it as soon as possible. The longer a tick remains, the more likely it is to transmit pathogens.

Use pointed tweezers or special tick tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible. Gently pull the tick out of the opening parallel to the skin, without twisting the tick. In the case of a tick remover, follow these instructions for use. And does the head remain in the wound? It will come out later on its own, just like a splinter. Disinfect the remaining wound with alcohol or an iodine povidone solution. Note the date of the bite and the place where you were bitten. Up to three months after the tick bite, the skin may discolor or you may experience symptoms associated with Lyme disease. Report your tick bite on Tekenradar.nl, so that you can always see where you suffered the bite and so that you can alert other people.

Do you not have any drawing tools with you and is the tick still small and flat, so it has not yet feasted on your blood? Then try to remove it from your skin with a nail.

One of the myths surrounding ticks is that they fall on you from trees. But ticks don’t get higher than one and a half meters and are in tall grass, on dead leaves or in the bushes. In addition, ticks cannot jump or fly, but they can crawl and climb well.

To prevent a bite from a tick, you prefer to avoid dense nature and it is better to stay on the hiking trail. Wearing tight-fitting clothing also helps and children better cover their heads as ticks like to bite children on their head and neck. So also wear closed shoes, long sleeves and preferably pants with long legs. To really protect yourself, you can also tuck your trouser legs into your socks.

In addition, you can apply an insect repellent that contains DEET and you can soak clothing with the insect repellent Permitrine or spray it with a product containing DEET.

You can do this even more after a tick bite

Do you suspect that you have encountered a tick bite on your skin, but can’t get the tick out and could it have been longer since you were bitten? In that case, always visit a doctor who can help you with the bite. If necessary, your doctor can prescribe antibiotics to help treat Lyme disease.
