How to recover deleted messages on iPhone?

You accidentally deleted an iMessage. Don’t worry, it’s still possible to get it back. With iCloud or through a third-party app, your messages can quickly make their way back to your iPhone. We explain how to do it.

Who hasn’t accidentally deleted a message, or worse, an entire conversation? Whether personal or professional, losing your data is never pleasant. Luckily, if you are the proud owner of an iPhone, you have a few options left to recover your precious messages.

Recover data via iCloud

We never advise too much to store your data on iCloud. This device is the perfect way to recover all of your data in the event of loss, theft, breakage or change of iPhone. And so it is, too, to recover deleted messages. Obviously, it will have been necessary, upstream, to keep its data on the cloud. To check it, go directly to your smartphone in Settings, then click on your name et tap iCloud. If the Messages application cursor is green, then you will be able to recover your deleted messages. In this case, here is the procedure to follow (Note that if you choose this option, it implies that all the data on your smartphone will be deleted):

  • See you in Settings
  • Go to General
  • Choose Reset, then Erase content and settings
  • Restart your iPhone
  • When the App and data screen appears, select Restore from iCloud

Find your messages with dr.fone

If this method seems too drastic to you. Be aware that there is a free third-party application called Dr.Fone. When you have downloaded the latter, all you have to do is open it then:

  • Click on Backup and Restore
  • Connect your iPhone to your computer then, in the left column, select Messages and Accessories
  • Click on To safeguard
  • end with Recover to Device

Recover your data with Finder

Similar to iCloud, it’s always a good idea to sync your iPhone with Finder. Indeed, if the backup of your iMessages is authorized in your Finder, then it will be very simple for you to recover your conversations. With this method you will, in a few minutes, recover all of your data saved during your very last backup. Here’s how:

  • Connect your smartphone to your computer
  • Open Finder
  • At this point your iPhone should appear in the left column
  • Click it
  • Uncheck the Synchronize automatically box when this iPhone is connected
  • Finally press Restore Backup

Since you are recovering the items from your last backup, be aware that you will lose the data added to your iPhone since this last backup.

Find your messages with PhoneRescue

This time it’s via an external application, PhoneRescue, that you will be able, without losing your other data, to recover deleted conversations or messages. If you have a Mac, you will need to go to iTunes then in About iTunes. If, on the other hand, you are using a Windows computer, then you will have to go to iTunes, press the keys Ctrl + B to display the menu bar. Then click on Aide and finally select About iTunes. In any case, the iTunes version will be the first thing that will appear when the window opens.

Once this first step has been completed, you will need to download the version of the application that corresponds to your operating system and your iTunes.

If you have a Mac, open the file .dmg then drag PhoneRescue to your folder Applications. From then on, you can launch PhoneRescue. If your message was deleted recently, then click Recover from iPhone. You will be able to check the data you want to recover. Then click on Scanner. After a few minutes, you will be offered to recover your personal data from the iOS device. Click on Messages and not on Recover (this option is only available with a license). Thus, you should have recovered the accidentally deleted data.
