As part of the tender, the police will receive a total of 70 BMWs with front and rear speed radars using two different technologies. At the same time, cars without visible markings do not serve as replacements for Škoda Superb cars, but as additions to the status of police “fighters”. You will also continue to meet unmarked superbas on the roads.

During Friday’s handover, it was also evident how much the police tried to hide the identity of the police cars. And even more carefully than with the two generations of Superbs, with which the hidden method of measurement began.

For example, you can no longer orientate yourself according to the unusually high antenna, as in the case of superbs. While the marked BMW received this “rod” used for the internal communication of the choir, the unmarked cars have it integrated in the typical roof “fin”, which is quite common for five-seater BMWs.

The second previously visible police “improvement”, i.e. the bright silver ramp with visual signaling, is also a thing of the past. The LEDs, which light up at the command of the crew, are located not on the glass, but up to a few centimeters behind the glass, both from the back and from the side.

Behind the front window, the diodes are also visible with difficulty, they are located in the area of the sun visors.

Unobtrusive configuration
This can primarily be helped by what configuration of the car the law enforcement officers use. First of all, it is the current BMW 5 Series Touring, i.e. in the station wagon body.

In addition, this is a modernized variant, which from 2020 can be recognized, for example, by the different graphics of the front and rear lights. The rear lights have a striking dark outline.

It may be too late for speeding drivers to read the letters on the back, but it’s good to point out that unmarked police BMWs at least have factory markings.

That is, the xDrive logo for all-wheel drive and the inscription 540i, which indicates the 5 series and the trade name of the three-liter inline six-cylinder engine with an output of 333 horsepower, the 40i.

That it should perhaps be clear at first glance that it is a powerful six-cylinder and not a basic two-liter diesel? It is not so. Gone are the days when BMW let you recognize which motorization and how many cylinders it is, and that only by the tailpipes.

At the moment, the series 5 has the same shaped end caps, i.e. one polygonal one for each side, for all civilian models up to the 540i. Only the version differs from M Performance and thoroughbred M5.

Even the absence of the popular M package, which has visually distinguished BMW cars for decades, will not help inquisitive drivers, because it currently differs only in the dark color of the mentioned exhaust tips on the back of the 5 series. The front has a visibly more aggressive bumper.

So it may sound like a paradox, but even if this time the police for hidden surveillance reached into premium waters instead of the Mladá Boleslav brand, such cars will not be any more noticeable on the roads, especially thanks to carefully hidden modifications.
