Although some people sometimes see sugar as the devil, we really need it. Of course, in moderation and preferably from ‘the right’ foods. But your blood sugar level can also be too high. How do you notice that and what do you do about it?

We recently described why you can’t put down that bag of chips after one chip.

High blood sugar

Blood sugar is actually exactly what it sounds like: the amount of sugar in your blood. When you eat something, that level rises and your pancreas starts to make insulin. This causes your blood sugar level to drop again, because your body can use the sugar as energy thanks to insulin.

According to the Heart Foundation You can notice a number of symptoms if your blood sugar level is too high:

  • You have wounds that heal poorly
  • You opted out
  • You have to pee a lot
  • You are very thirsty and have a dry mouth
  • You are very tired
  • Your vision is blurred or your eyes are bothering you
  • You suffer from recurring infections

You may have diabetes if your blood sugar levels are often too high. If you suspect this, you should see a doctor who can take a blood test. You won’t be able to figure this out with just one test, but it may take some time.

You can do this

If your blood sugar level is too high – if you have diabetes you can measure this yourself – it is called a hyper. The content then exceeds 10 mmol/l, describes the Diabetes Fund. If this is the case, they recommend drinking a lot, but drinks without sugar. So think of water or tea. It is better to avoid alcohol, as well as sweet drinks. Your body wants to excrete the excess sugar, so you have to help with that a little.

Exercise can also help, according to the Diabetes Fund. Your blood sugar level then drops because your muscles use sugar as energy. You may need to inject insulin if you use it.

Your blood sugar level can also be so high that it gets out of hand. Then you faint, for example. When it gets really serious, your breathing is very deep and your breath smells like acetone. Then call 112.

Please note: this is not medical advice. Are you worried and do you recognize many of the above symptoms? Then consult a doctor.
