How to Prevent White Foam Layer in Tea

How does it arise?

Especially when tea comes from a coffee machine, a white layer often appears on it, but this can also occur when it comes from a kettle. In many cases this is because there is lime in the water. In certain parts of the Netherlands there is even a lot of lime in the water. This creates a white foam layer on the tea.

Other reasons

But there are also other reasons for such a layer. For example, it may mean that your kettle needs descaling, but it may also have to do with the reaction of the tea to the hot water. Tea leaves contain proteins, amino acids, fatty acids and oxygen that react to the hot water.

It can also be caused by pouring in too hot water. This happens, for example, when you don’t wait until the kettle is ready and pour it right away.

Can it hurt?

Don’t worry, the white foam layer is harmless. It is simply a reaction of the tea bag to the hot water. It does not give off any taste or smell and therefore does not affect the tea. However, not everyone finds it equally appetizing. Fortunately, you can easily prevent it.

This is how you prevent it

To prevent the white foam layer, it is best to let the kettle stand for two seconds after boiling before you pour it in. After all, the ideal temperature for tea is usually around 80 °C (depending on the type of tea).

You can also use special water filter jugs or tap filters, with which you can easily and quickly descale tap water before using it for your tea or drinking water.

You could also add a few drops of lemon juice to your tea. Lime is broken down by acids. The foam layer will then disappear like snow in the sun, but be careful not to add too much.
