In New York City, when a driver receives a traffic ticket, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers several ways to pay it. In accordance with traffic laws, said payment must be made within 30 days after the date on which the ticket was issued. This will prevent the driver from receiving additional charges or penalties that may affect their driving record.

In the same way, if the driver considers that said fine is unfair, he can dispute it through a hearing. The claim process for a fine must also be carried out within the term established for its payment.

How to pay a fine in New York?

According to the state government website, tickets issued in New York City can be paid online, in person, or by mail. Payment by phone was previously accepted through the Finance Department, but is no longer available. It’s important for people who receive traffic tickets to decide what to do before the 30-day window runs out after they receive the ticket (whether they’re going to pay it or dispute it).

According to experts, on many occasions it is better to pay the ticket, before requesting a hearing, since the process can be cumbersome if the driver does not have the necessary evidence to justify his violation. Most of the scenarios that allow a ticket to be invalidated are related to medical emergencies.

In case you decide to pay the fine, the driver can choose between the following modes, each with its own specific steps:

Online: It is the most convenient modality, but it requires the driver to have some important information at hand, such as: infraction number, license number and state where the vehicle is registered. The steps to follow are those:
1. Visit the New York City official website.
2. Click on the service “Pay a parking fine”.
3. Click on the “Pay Parking or Camera Violation Online with License Plate, Citation, or NOL Number” link.
4. Enter the violation number OR your license plate number, the state in which the car is registered, and the type.
5. Enter the payment information.
6. After sending the payment, it will be posted in 2-4 business days.

By mail: To do so under this modality, the driver must only follow the instructions reflected on the back of the ticket: include in an envelope the check or money order (cash cannot be sent) for the corresponding amount and a copy of the fine ticket. The envelope must be sent to the following postal address:

New York City Department of Finance
Church Street Station
PO Box 3640
New York, NY 10008-3640

In person: It is not necessary to make an appointment to pay a fine in person in New York City. The driver should only go to one of the offices arranged for this purpose to do his duty.

Those drivers who wish to clarify doubts before issuing the payment can call the attention line, dialing 311 or 212.639.9675.
