How to monitor the battery status of your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

Lithium-ion batteries have limited runtime, so it’s a good idea to know the remaining battery life of your headed devices in order to make a replacement.

We already explained to you in a previous article how to find out the current state of your MacBook battery. Obviously, it is not only the battery of headed computers that loses autonomy, since all portable devices with a lithium battery see their lifespan drop over recharges.

If you notice that your portable device is no longer able to last all day, even with a full charge, it may be wise to consider a battery replacement. However, before making any changes, knowing the state of life of your current battery can be helpful. We summarize the possibilities available to you to obtain this information.

For iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

With their lithium-ion battery, the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad see their autonomy drop over recharging. Indeed, designed to withstand between 300 and 500 recharge cycles, li-ion batteries quickly lose capacity once this average is reached. The device then loses power, but also sees its autonomy drastically decrease, to the point of no longer being able to last a full day.

For several years now, Apple has allowed its users to know at any time the state of the device’s battery. By going to the settings of your device, you can find a lot of information on the battery of this terminal in the Battery tab. If you tap Battery status, the device will estimate its current battery capacity and tell you whether or not it advises you to replace it.

However, while this information is relatively clear, it gives almost no details of the battery usage since it was turned on. This is why, by digging into the bowels of his iOS device, it is possible to find very precise figures concerning the battery. Handling is certainly tedious, but it surprisingly allows you to learn a lot about the accumulator of our iOS terminal.

To do this, go back to your iPhone settings. Scroll down to the Privacy menu, which is just below Battery, then enter it. Find Analysis and Improvements at the bottom of the window, and tap on it. First, make sure you have enabled the Share scan (iPhone + Watch) option, and then tap Scan data.

You will then access an endless list of ips files. We are obviously not going to make you search for the desired file by reading the names one by one. Indeed, make a light scroll top to bottom, then search for “log-aggregated-yyyy-mm-dd-xxxxxx.ips”. Replace obviously yyyy-mm-dd (in year-month-day format) by the current or most recent date proposed. Then select the file to reach an infinitely long and incomprehensible script for ordinary people.

Do not panic, a little manipulation is to be implemented to find the desired information. Do not tap the share icon at the top right, but select the entire text with the blue selection eyedroppers. To do this, keep your finger pressed on a word and blue the text with the two blue handles. Then copy the text, then head into a word processing app, like Notes. Paste the script there, then tap the three option dots at the top of the screen. Then select Find in note, then type “BatteryCycleCount”. You will then find the number of recharging cycles that the battery of your device has undergone between the two beacons. , following BatteryCycleCount. In the event that this figure is well over 500, you should seriously consider replacing your battery.

Before arriving at the replacement of the battery of your iPhone, we advise you to adopt some habits to preserve its autonomy. You can find our advice in this article.

For Apple Watch

Unlike its head partners, the Apple Watch does not benefit from a li-ion battery, but a li-po. While they both work in much the same way, the lithium-po battery uses an electrolyte in the form of a gel, which makes it less dangerous and therefore more stable. It can also see its reduced size, and therefore be inserted into a smaller device, such as an Apple Watch. The battery charge capacity of an Apple Watch is 1000 cycles, which represents approximately 5 years of use. If, on the other hand, li-ion batteries only degrade with use, li-po batteries wear out naturally, even when not in use.

The Apple Watch must be used with an iPhone, it is possible to tamper with the headed smartphone to find out the state of the battery of his watch. Indeed, when we go to the analysis data as explained previously, you will find two “log” files referenced on the same date. Open both, and find the one that mentions your watch software, namely WatchOS.

Then follow the same steps as stated above to find the number of cycles your watch has undergone.

Apple has been offering for some time now to get a brief overview of the battery status by going to the watch settings.

To do this, head into the Settings app on your watch. Scroll down until you reach the Battery tab, then tap it. This screen shows you what the battery consumption was over the last 24 hours. By tapping Battery Status, WatchOS will tell you what is the maximum capacity your watch is capable of supporting.
