When the data showed a correlation, the researchers decided to look at a very small object with a white dwarf’s accretion disk.

“Now there is a relationship between the blinking method and the charging of the central accretion object,” said Colin Burke, a professor of astronomy and graduate student at Arbana-Champaign University in Illinois.

He said this could be used to predict what a glowing signal from an intermediate black hole would look like.
