Scrap metal can be found in almost every city. You can bring various metal waste to them, e.g. steel, non-ferrous metals, but also aluminum, which is popular among scrap collectors. You can bring to the purchase both elements from demolition and renovation, but also various waste generated during production, such as chips or scraps. In addition, whole items are also accepted – you can return, for example, engines, rims or blinds or refrigerators. How much does aluminum cost and what does its purchase price depend on?
Contrary to appearances, earning money by selling scrap metal is not only used by homeless people. Due to the fact that the prices of secondary raw materials are soaring every year, collecting aluminum scrap has become an attractive form of income for some Poles. Scrap aluminum or brass components can bring a lot of extra funds. However, keep in mind that companies pay differently for aluminum scrap. What determines the price of aluminum?
The cost of aluminum depends on on the current demand on the domestic market and the prevailing situation. In addition, the specificity of the products sold is also important. Therefore, the purchase price will be different for aluminum rims and different for aluminum cans.
As with most things, the price of aluminum depends on the region of Poland where the purchase is located. For example, when it comes to the purchase of aluminum cans, the highest prices can be obtained in June 2023 in Wielkopolska and Lower Silesia. There, prices range from PLN 3.20 to PLN 4.70 per kilogram. According to the data of the KB.pl portal, the highest prices can be found in Pruszków and Wrocław, while the lowest, among others, in in Bochnia, Bytom, Opoczno or Żagań.
How much aluminum costs depends on the degree of scrap contamination. Therefore, for example, the price for aluminum scrap in the form of e.g. of painted profiles will be much lower than the amount that can be obtained for unpainted profiles that are additionally cleaned. The same rule also applies to sorted scrap, the price of which will be higher than if you wanted to sell unsorted scrap at a purchase point.
In addition, the price of aluminum also depends on the season. Usually, in the summer months, the prices per kilogram of aluminum cans fall, only to increase in the winter months, for example. This is because there are more outdoor concerts and events in the summer, where access to such scrap is easy and plentiful.
Is it profitable to collect aluminum?
In order to make good money collecting scrap metal, e.g. aluminum cans, you have to put in some effort. The price per kilogram of such scrap is on average approx. PLN 3.95 – PLN 4.70 gross. There are usually about 50-55 cans in one kilogram – depending on their size, so to earn some better money, you have to try really hard. Of course, whether and how much we earn from collecting aluminum scrap depends on the quantity and size of the collected product, as well as the price. And this is different in each cluster. That is why it is worth calling a few local purchases first and asking about the price per kilogram of aluminum scrap. This initial research is really important, because the difference between places, even less than 10 groszy, can turn out to be significant if we take into account the weight of scrap.
In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the possibility of transporting scrap, if we have a larger amount of it. This option is reserved for people who have, for example, an old car or agricultural machine. The purchase may agree to transport such scrap, and this is another savings for the customer.
The sale of aluminum scrap and more is a good idea to improve your household budget, but it should not be treated as a way to earn a steady income. It’s quite hard and tedious work that requires you to spend a lot of time collecting, cleaning and segregating metals to get a better price. By applying the above rules, you can certainly earn more, but there is still a question of perseverance and spending many hours searching, and then sorting and cleaning scrap metal.
Scrap purchase: how much does aluminum cost and how much does other metals cost?
Aluminum scrap varies in price depending on its type and condition. On average, you can get about PLN 3.95 – 4.70 per kilogram of aluminum cans. In turn, in the case of castings, the price can be found at about PLN 4-4.5 per kilogram, and aluminum electrical scrap – about PLN 5 per kilogram. Unpainted aluminum profiles can get an even better price, even PLN 8 per kilogram of scrap. However, aluminum is not among the most profitable scrap metals. People who collect scrap metal know well that the highest prices are obtained, for example, by insulated copper. Various cables and wires guarantee high purchase prices, but most often their origin is highly debatable. Usually it is the result of theft, which unfortunately can have tragic consequences – thieves most often steal cables in isolated places, e.g. buried in forests. Needless to say, how often such attempts to steal high-voltage wires end.
The prices for the best paid “junk gems” reach even several dozen zlotys per kilogram. For example, bronze scrap can be obtained from PLN 20 and above per kilogram, copper earns from approx. PLN 26 per kilogram, and the price for pure tungsten in metallic form in thick pieces is even PLN 53 per kilogram. The price of tungsten varies, of course, depending on its content in the scrap and what kind of scrap it is.
Even higher prices can be obtained for sintered carbide, the purchase price of which ranges from PLN 80 to PLN 90 per kilogram.
