How to Make January Feel Shorter: A Neuroscientist’s Perspective on Time Perception and Daytime Activities

“After what felt like 84 years, we finally had the last day of January,” “I’ve lived several lives this month,” and “January lasted so long I got my period twice.” These are jokes that often recur on social media. The posts are shared and liked thousands of times: many people shared the feeling that January lasts forever.

It is these types of so-called ‘memes’ that, according to neuroscientist Hedderik van Rijn of the University of Groningen, who specializes in time perception, can help you get through the boredom and realize that you are not the only one with this feeling.

Daytime activities

Let’s get the facts: just like December and August, January has 31 days. But the difference is in the daytime activities, says Van Rijn. “We are coming back from a busy December in which we all had holidays and fun activities. Then comes the daily grind. People have to pay attention to their money again and we end up in a standard pattern.”

A pattern that, according to Van Rijn, mainly consists of going to work or school every day, doing administration – there is simply little to look forward to. “Every day seems the same and it’s no wonder that the days feel like a routine.”

Time flies when having fun

Everyone knows the saying ‘time flies when you’re having fun’. Van Rijn states that this is also the common thread of the ‘long’ January. “If you don’t do many fun things, you are more aware of time. And that can influence your perception of time.”

How long a month or period can feel has to do with your perception of time. But that perception of time can be different for many people. “This may have to do with your age, among other things. Younger people undertake more on average, while older people take it a bit slower. The days can feel longer for them.”

By the way, you can do something about the rut. Van Rijn advises making plans in January, such as a day out or a few days away. “Although August, for example, also lasts 31 days, you feel like that month goes by faster because that’s when most people go to terraces and festivals and go on holiday.”

Other good news: the month is over! We are now living on February 1st. Also a dark and perhaps somewhat boring month for some. But it is also the shortest month of the year.

Disadvantage: it is one day longer this year…
