How to Make a Replacement Key Yourself: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you ever lost your keys too? Or did they accidentally slam them in the apartment? It’s a really awkward situation. Especially if there is no one in the family to rush to help with their bond.

Fortunately, in similar cases, a locksmith can be called. But he will ask for a sum for his work, which you will very likely be surprised by. That’s why it’s prudent to keep spare keys stashed away at work. Or with a friend who lives nearby or reliable neighbors.

Make a replacement key yourself

But Murphy’s laws work inexorably. Therefore, in the event that you found yourself in front of the door of your apartment without keys, others will not be available either.

So it is the turn of the locksmith or one more, quite unknown option. Although it can be assumed that you will not have all the necessary tools with you. On the other hand, these things are common enough that a good neighbor or friend could help you get them.

Camera, coins and plastic

You will need 2 coins of any kind, but the same, as well as a mobile phone, adhesive tape, a marker, a plastic card and scissors. Place the key and one coin side by side on the table. Then place the second one on the phone’s display. Adjust the camera so that the coin on the table matches the size of the coin on the display. Now take a picture of the whole thing and save the photo.

This photo must, quite logically, be taken before you lose the keys, because you can’t take photos of what isn’t there on the staircase. So maybe do it right now. Just in case. And then all that’s left is to believe that you might lose your keys, but you certainly won’t lose your phone at the same time.

Then when you find you have nothing to unlock, find the photo with the key and coin and get all the other stuff. Cover the phone screen with transparent adhesive tape and carefully paint the outline of the key on it with a marker. To be sure, carefully cover the drawing with another tape so that the drawing is not erased when peeling it off.

Remove the tape from the phone and stick it on a plastic card, from which cut out the key according to the contours. And you can unlock. It’s not complicated and can save you a lot of money. The whole process will take some time, but you would still spend that time waiting for the locksmith.
