How to Lock WhatsApp Chats Using a Secret Code to Make It More Secure

WhatsApp recently released the feature Chat Lock or Chat Lock to lock chats in a hidden folder. Now WhatsApp adds a layer of chat security that is locked with a secret code feature.

This secret code feature was announced directly by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on his WhatsApp Channel. He said the secret code for Chat Lock will be an additional layer of privacy to protect sensitive conversations.

“Launching a secret code for Chat Lock on WhatsApp so you can protect your chats with a unique password,” Zuckerberg said in a post on his WhatsApp channel, as quoted detikINET, Friday (1/12/2023).

“You can now set locked chats to appear only when you type a secret code in the search bar, so no one can accidentally find your most private conversations,” he continued.

Thanks to the secret code feature, chats that have been locked are not only safer but also more hidden. The reason is that WhatsApp users can hide the chat they want behind the secret code they have chosen.

WhatsApp says the secret code feature is designed to make locked chats more difficult to find by people accessing the user’s cellphone, or when the user shares the cellphone with other people.

Thanks to the secret code feature, users WhatsApp can set a unique password that is different from the code to unlock the phone. The password can contain words or emojis, the important thing is that it is easy to remember.

Users can also hide the Locked Chats folder from the chat list in the WhatsApp application. This folder can only be found by typing the selected secret code in the search bar.

But WhatsApp still provides the option to display the Locked Chats folder in the chat list. Apart from that, WhatsApp users can now also lock chats by simply pressing and holding the chat, so there is no longer a need to enter chat settings.

How to lock WhatsApp chat with a secret code

• Open the WhatsApp application and make sure you are running the latest version
• Make sure you have set up device authentication such as passcode, fingerprint, or Face ID
• Long press the chat you want to lock
• Tap the vertical hamburger menu in the top right corner then select ‘Chat lock’
• Tap ‘Lock this chat with fingerprint’ then confirm with your fingerprint
• Open the locked Chat folder and then open the Settings option
• Tap ‘Secret code’ then select ‘Create secret code’
• Enter the desired secret code that is easy to remember, then tap ‘Continue’
• Confirm the secret code then tap ‘Done’
