If you want to play audio from iPhone or iPad directly to HomePod or HomePod mini, you can place your device on the smart speaker or use the AirPlay menu. But, alternatively, the fastest way is to use a shortcut.
Using the Shortcuts app, you can create a simple automation that will instantly set HomePod mini as an audio output device. Once configured, you can trigger it from the Shortcuts widget, or you can add it directly to your home screen.

Create Playback Destination Shortcut for HomePod
Let’s start by creating the shortcut itself. Open the “Shortcuts” application on your iPhone or iPad.
Then, in the “My Shortcuts” tab, press the “+” button in the upper right corner to create a new shortcut.
Here, press the “Add action” button.
Find and add the action “Set read destination”.
Press the “iPhone” button.
Here, select your HomePod or HomePod mini.
Now tap on the “Next” button at the top of your device screen.
Give the shortcut a recognizable name (we used “Set HomePod.”) And hit the “Done” button.
Now, when you tap the ‘Set HomePod’ shortcut in the Shortcuts app while near your smart speaker, your iPhone or iPad will instantly set HomePod or HomePod mini as audio output.
Add the HomePod exit shortcut to your home screen
The shortcut won’t do you much good if it’s just in the Shortcuts app. The best way to use it is to display it on the home screen. That way, you can start streaming audio from your iPhone or iPad to HomePod or HomePod mini with just one click (when Home screen shortcuts are triggering in the background, without opening the Shortcuts application).

To get started, open the “Shortcuts” application. Next, from the “Set HomePod” shortcut, tap the three-dot menu button.
Here, select the three-dot menu button in the upper right corner.
Press the “Add to Home Screen” button.
From here you can change the name or icon of the shortcut. In fact, you can use any image or icon from the web. Tap the icon and select the “Choose a photo” option.
Then choose the image for your camera roll.
In the preview, press the “Choose” button.
Finally, press the “Add” button located in the upper right corner.
The shortcut will be added to the home screen of your iPhone or iPad. You can move the shortcut icon to a convenient location (we recommend the first home screen.).
And you are ready. Just tap the shortcut icon from your Home screen to instantly stream audio to your HomePod or HomePod mini.
