How to Get Rid of Jet Lag: Tips for Adjusting Your Sleep Rhythm and Nutrition

Going on vacation to a distant destination is wonderful, but one Jet lag can really ruin your mood when you finally arrive (home). This way you ensure that you are fresh and fruity again as soon as possible.

Cause

When you have jet lag, your biological clock is disrupted because you have crossed several time zones in a short time. Your brain adapts to this faster than your body, causing you to become physically disrupted. For example, you want to go to bed when the day has just started, or you can’t get to sleep when it’s time for bed. In addition, you can suffer from irritability, concentration problems, stomach and intestinal complaints and disturbances in appetite. All in all, not much fun – not when you come home after a wonderful holiday, but certainly not when you have just arrived at the destination you so wanted to go to.

East or west?

How much trouble you get from jet lag depends, among other things, on which direction you fly. In general, it will affect you more when you fly east. If you fly to an Asian country, you will experience jet lag especially after the outward journey, and if you go on holiday to America, you will probably have a harder time when you return to the Netherlands.

Adjust sleep rhythm

Trust us, we know how tempting it is to curl up in bed during the day if you’re suffering from jet lag. Still, it really is wiser to bite the bullet and stay awake until it’s bedtime according to local time. As a result, your body adapts faster and you get rid of the jet lag sooner. If you want to avoid having to wait a whole day before you can sleep, book a flight where you will arrive in the evening. If you’re flying east, you can prepare by trying to sleep during the flight.

Adjust nutrition

You can also help your body by adjusting your diet. Eat at usual times according to the local time, avoid fatty foods and drink plenty of water. Although alcohol and caffeine are tempting when you’re suffering from jet lag, they mess up your biological clock even more – and you definitely don’t want that.

New rhythm

The main tip is to strictly adapt to the new rhythm. If you want to stay awake, it is especially wise to look for a lot of sunlight, go outside and move. If you’re not tired but it’s time to sleep, you can help yourself fall asleep by wearing earplugs and a sleeping mask and, for example, putting on a playlist of rain sounds.

This way you will get rid of your jet lag in no time and you can enjoy your holiday or return home.
