Dust mites, you can’t avoid them. They are everywhere in your house. In your furniture, carpet, but also certainly in your bedroom and especially in your bed. But do you really suffer from that and how do you get rid of it? And how do you know whether complaints come from the house dust mite or from something else? Sleep advisor Sanne van Better Bed explains.

What is dust mites?

House dust mites are small creatures of about 0.3 mm in size and are not visible with the naked eye. But under the microscope you are scared for a while! The idea that your mattress is full of these critters with 6 legs and feelers. House dust mites feed mainly on human skin flakes. No wonder they are also called bed mites.

Do I suffer from dust mites and what are the symptoms?

Dust mites are everywhere, but it only becomes annoying when they bother you. This is a house dust mite allergy. How do you recognize these? Your body reacts to house dust mite excrement when you have an allergy. Because they are so small, they easily float through the air. As soon as you inhale these while you are allergic, you get tears, sneezing fits, a stuffy nose and you are short of breath.

Dust mite allergy tips?

Complete removal of dust mites is impossible. You can reduce the number:

  • Prevent damp and dusty places with an air purifier

  • Remove as much dust as possible with a damp cloth.

  • Ventilate your house and open the windows ajar. Ventilate especially when the air outside is dry.

  • Protect your mattress with an extra cover or flannel

  • Wash your bedding at a minimum of 60 degrees. At this temperature, the dust mites and eggs die.

  • Keep your bedroom as empty as possible
