How to Get Rid of a Song Stuck in Your Head: Tips and Tricks

Is that viral song on TikTok constantly on repeat in your head? Or the song you heard in a movie haunts you? We’ve all experienced this at one point or another, so here’s what you need to do to get rid of it!

Maybe the song you heard is beautiful and makes you feel good for a while, but when it keeps repeating itself in your head, it can become very annoying. Like yawning, this phenomenon occurs without our being able to control it:

“The auditory cortex is located in the temporal lobe of the brain. If we hear a familiar song that stops suddenly, these areas of the brain activate and wait to hear the continuation. Then, even when it’s quiet or if the song stops playing, the auditory cortex remains activated. Usually, the part we memorize is called the hook of the song, and it can be represented by a few happy words, which are generally repeated in the song. That’s why commercial pieces are so popular,” explains doctor Samata Sharma to “Reader’s Digest.”

A study by the University of Durham, England revealed that women experience this phenomenon more often than men, and if you experience it too, here’s how you can get rid of the obsession!

How do you get a song that haunts you out of your head

One of the things you can do to get a song out of your mind is to listen to it in its entirety, as this will help your brain fill in the part it hasn’t heard before. And choosing to listen to another song can help because it can become embedded in your brain and distract you from the song that’s obsessing over you.

Engaging in activities that require concentration also helps, such as puzzles and math problems. Finally, one trick you can turn to is chewing gum, as chewing can train your auditory senses and interrupt the song repeating in your head, the publication said.
