How to Get Consumers to Embrace Plant-Based Products: The Impact of Labeling

It would be good for the environment if people sometimes replaced their piece of meat with a plant-based product. But how do you get consumers to this point? Well, by not calling a product ‘plant-based’, researchers at the University of Southern California (VS).

‘Vegan’ is the least popular

Test subjects were allowed to choose a gift: either a basket with meat and dairy products, or one without. The plant-based package was given a different name in different test groups. Was the package called ‘vegetable’? Then 27 percent chose it. The name ‘vegan’ scored even worse: only 20 percent wanted that box.

But as soon as the same package was called ‘healthy’ or ‘sustainable’, that percentage increased. The food basket with this label scored the best: 44 percent preferred it to the meat package.
