How to get a job with a thin CV and little experience – NRK Lifestyle – Tips, advice and insight

It is easy to think that you are at the back of the queue, since you have no work experience to show.

– It is important to remember everything you have done in life. It is almost guaranteed that everyone has something they can point to, without formal work experience, says editor of Nav Jobblyst, Kristin Dahl.

Here are some examples of what you can include in your resume:

1. Have you participated in leisure activities? Then you have probably gained good experience with teamwork.

2. Are you a gamer? Then you may have gained technical competence that others do not have. You communicate in other languages and you manage stress while maintaining focus.

3. Have you shopped for family members during the corona era? Then you show that you have stood your ground and that you contribute to society.

4. Have you worked as a volunteer? Then you have gained work experience, even if you have not received a formal salary.

5. Have you been in practice through school or have you participated in a working week in upper secondary school?

6. Courses and assignments.

Do you have no references to refer to? Or do you want to write about how someone else describes you as a person?

– References can be a football coach, manager at the volunteer center or a teacher, says Dahl.

Have you participated in leisure activities? Then you have probably gained good experience with teamwork. You may want to mention in a job application.

How to write the application

– In the application, you must write why you are the right person, what you can contribute and your motivation for the position, Dahl says.

Do you recognize yourself in the personal qualities listed in the job advertisement?

– Remember to answer it, and feel free to write that you are the right person with the right qualities, if this matches you, she says.

It’s also nice to write down experience that says something about who you are.

– For example, that you go for a walk with the neighbor’s dog, sit babysitter, have a year off or that you train a football team, says HR manager Kari Hanne Holland in McDonald’s. The company has provided jobs for many young people without work experience.

You should not do this

– The biggest mistake you can make is to send the same application letter to all the jobs you apply for, says Holland.

It is also important that you do not list the CV in your application. Remember that the application is a separate document.

– What is your tip for those who have holes in their CV?

– To be open and honest in the process I think will be an advantage. You may want to explain what is behind the application letter. It requires a little more effort, but allows us to see the person behind the CV, says Holland.
