If there are too many photos, videos and apps stored on your iPhone and you can’t install the latest iOS software update due to limited disk space, there is a solution that doesn’t require deleting anything or spending money. Instead, you can and should take advantage of several iOS features to free up space on your iPhone.
There are two built-in iOS settings that can help you free up a significant amount of space on your iPhone – one permanent and one temporary – so you can install the latest software updates, take more photos and videos, and download more apps. Here’s what you need to know.
This story is part of 12 days of advicehelping you make the most of technology, your home, and your health this holiday season.

Optimize photos and videos on iPhone
If you want to keep your precious memories (even just screenshots of memes) but also want to free up disk space, the easiest way is to optimize the photos and videos already stored on your device.
By default, whenever you take a photo or video, it is saved in full resolution on your device. If you take photos and videos at the highest possible resolution, they can take up a lot of space. A one-minute video recorded in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second takes up about 400 MB, or almost half a GB. That’s quite significant.
To optimize your photos and videos, go to Arrangement > Photo and turn it on Optimize iPhone storage (for this to work you need to have the file iCloud Photos above setting is enabled). Depending on how many photos and videos you have on your iPhone, this may take a while, but once it’s done, you’ll have more storage space on your device.
For this to work, you need to enable the iCloud Photos setting.

All full-resolution photos and videos are then uploaded to iCloud, while smaller, lower-resolution versions are stored on your device to take up less space. If you want to access higher resolution photos and videos, you can open the Photos app and download any optimized files. this requires a decent internet connection. The photos and videos you just take can be available in full resolution, so you don’t have to download each photo or video.
If you don’t have enough space in iCloud, this is easier to do upgrade your cloud rather than buying a new phone. In the US, you can upgrade to 50GB for just one dollar per month, or upgrade to 200GB for $3 per month or 2TB for $10 per month. Prices vary by country or region.
To update iCloud on iPhone, open it Arrangement > (Your name) > iCloud > Manage account storage > Buy more memory. Select a package and follow the instructions. If you upgrade to a paid iCloud subscription, you’ll get access to iCloud+, which also offers iCloud Private Relay and Hide My Email features.
You can spend as little as $1 per month to get more iCloud storage.

Lighten the load on your largest applications
You don’t use all the apps stored on your iPhone. Many of them are just there, like apps from your favorite airline, third-party cameras, and music production. Even if you use it occasionally, you probably won’t need access to most apps every day, so you should consider offloading apps if you need the space.
Suppose you want to download and install the latest iOS update. If it’s a major update like iOS 16, you may need more than 5 GB to install the software. If it’s a point update, like iOS 16.1, you’ll need about 1 GB. And if you don’t have enough space to update, you can quickly delete an app, which is a happy medium between keeping and deleting an app.
Go to Arrangement > General > iPhone storage and see which apps take up the most space. Some built-in apps like Photos and Messages cannot be deleted, so be careful. If you find a large app that you want to delete, tap and press it Unload the application. Wait a few moments and the app will be removed offline and your documents and data will remain saved on your device.
To “uninstall” an application, double-click Offload Application.

If you need temporary storage to download software, just go through the list and delete all possible applications. The amount waived for each application will vary, but you will see a number next to it Application size. Remove the number next to Documents & Data as it will remain on your device. The only way to get rid of it is to delete the app.
Remove as many apps as you need until you have enough space. You can’t use deleted apps, but if you want to get them back, open the App Library and tap the iCloud button to download them again. If the uninstalled app is on your home screen, just tap it to download it. You don’t need to log in again or anything; You will be able to access the app as if it had never been deleted.
