how to force 4G or 5G with Shortcuts

Apple has brought new actions in Shortcuts with the iOS 14.5 update currently in beta testing. One of them is the possibility of changing the connection mode of the mobile data.

It is actually not a new action, but additional settings in an already existing action : “Set cellular data”.

It therefore has under iOS 14.5 and later versions of the software for iPhone and iPad, an option to choose to activate 5G, 4G or 3G as a priority. There is also a 5G Auto setting which lets iOS decide between 4G and 5G depending on the application used and the need. Because we must not forget that 5G is greedy in mobile data, but also, and especially in energy and therefore has more impact on the autonomy of the iPhone or iPad than 4G.

Thus, by creating a shortcut in the Shortcuts app and inserting a choice of action using this “Adjust cellular data” block, then by configuring everything to find the result either in the Shortcuts widgets of the Today view, either on the home screen like a classic app, the user can switch from 4G to 5G and vice versa very easily.

This will also allow you to enjoy it with Siri for once. By configuring a siri trigger phrase, we can imagine saying “Siri, switch to 5G” to launch the corresponding shortcut and force the change to 5G. Ditto for 4G, or even 3G.

Remember that 5G is currently only available on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. And note that without this action of the Shortcuts app, to set the 5G or 4G connection, you have to go to Settings> Cellular data> Voice and data, which is not very practical.
