How to Fix Blurry Home Screen on iPhone: Troubleshooting Guide

One of the reasons why your home screen appears blurry. One simple explanation is that the iPhone might focus on a large widget, which would automatically blur the background when in use, in which case the background should be erased when you tap an empty area of the screen to exit the widget.

Barring that, ask yourself some basic questions: Has the screen ever been fuzzy and you didn’t notice? Did the blackout appear after the update? Is the blurring consistent, or does it only happen occasionally? What were you doing on your iPhone before you noticed the blurry home screen?

Once you have at least some of these answers, it’s time to start troubleshooting.

If your home screen is always blurry

It’s possible that your home screen is always blurry – especially when it’s just a background – that isn’t a by-product of a glitch or conflict with other software. One possibility is that your wallpaper may be in low resolution.

Unlock your iPhone, then swipe down from the top of the home screen to go back to the lock screen, unless it’s already locked.
Touch and hold the screen until it zooms out to bring up the lock editor and home screen.
Click the Customize button below your current screen configuration, then select Home screen.
If you think the resolution of the background image might be too low, tap the image button at the bottom of the screen and try a different one.
If image resolution is not a concern, click the Blur button in the lower right corner. You should immediately see the background image visible in the home screen preview.
Click Done in the upper-right corner when done, and then click Screen Preview to set it.

If your home screen is not usually blurry

A home screen that is only blurry for some time is most likely the result of some kind of bug or a deep-rooted setting that needs tweaking. Try restarting your iPhone to see if that fixes the problem. If not, check to see if there’s an iOS update by opening Settings and selecting General, then choose Software Update to see if there’s a new version to install. If the problem persists:

Open Settings and select General
Scroll down and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
Tap Reset, then select Reset Home Screen Layout.
If manually resetting the home screen doesn’t work, open Settings and select Accessibility.
Select Display & Text Size, then turn on the Reduce Transparency toggle. This should make your iPhone reduce transparency and blur effects on backgrounds to improve their clarity.
After you’ve tried either (or both) of the above steps, if you’re still out of luck, there are other possibilities.

If your home screen is not clear at certain times

Focus Mode aims to provide more optimal working conditions on your smartphone by setting a schedule and controlling which apps are usable, which notifications (if any) can be accessed, etc. It can also change the look of the lock screen, which can make your wallpapers look different than what you’re used to.

Open Settings and select Focus.
Select Do Not Disturb, then choose Options.
Find the Dim Lock Screen toggle button, and if it is on, turn it off.
It is also possible for dim screen settings to be shared across multiple devices. To turn this off, open Settings and select Focus.
Find the cross-device sharing toggle and turn it off to prevent Focus mode settings from activating automatically across all of your connected devices.
It’s possible to simply turn off focus mode, of course, but if you rely on it day in and day out, it’s best to leave it on and turn off screen dimming instead. This way, you can still take advantage of the features that benefit you without having to deal with unwanted screen modifications.
