How to Enhance Your WhatsApp Privacy: 6 Essential Security Features You Need to Activate Now




Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption, but it is important for users to further tighten privacy and security settings to keep accounts safe.

This popular instant messaging app provides several privacy features that users have to manually activate.

By implementing several features, users can protect conversations and personal information from digital crime threats.

The following are the privacy and security features of WhatsApp.

1. Two-step verification

Users can set a password or PIN when logging into their WhatsApp account

  • Open the WhatsApp application
  • Click on the three dots icon in the upper right corner
  • Enter the Settings menu
  • Click on account settings
  • Click on Two-Step Verification (two-step verification)
  • There will be a request to activate the feature with a PIN and click enable.
  • Create a PIN, enter six digits as desired.
  • WhatsApp will also ask you to enter the email address associated with the account, which will be used when you want to change the PIN.

2. WhatsApp biometric protection

This feature allows users to protect applications with fingerprint or Face ID.

Once activated from the Privacy menu, you must use your fingerprint (for Android) or Face ID (for iPhone) to open messages.

This is how it is

  • Open Settings
  • Select Privacy
  • Scroll down and select Fingerprint lock
  • Enable Fingerprint Unlock (Fingerprint Unlock)
  • You can choose to lock WhatsApp manually or automatically after 1 minute, or after 30 minutes.

3. Group privacy feature

Users can manage who can invite us to the group. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings menu
  • Click Account > Privacy > Groups
  • After that, select one of the available options, namely everyone, my contacts and my contact except.
  • Done, your group privacy has been set.

The three options available in privacy control who can add to the group. For example in everyone. This option allows anyone, including people not in your phonebook, to be added to the group without permission.

Meanwhile, the My Contacts option only allows contacts in your phonebook to be added to unauthorized groups.

The last option, My Contacts Except, is that only those in your phone book can be added to the Group without permission but some of them are excluded.

4. Outgoing Messaging Feature

Basically, this feature can automatically delete messages in chat rooms. WhatsApp provides three time options when messages will disappear automatically. Starting from 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days.

When selected, the dialog will disappear according to the time selected. However, previously sent messages will still appear even if the feature is activated.

Here’s how:

Private Chat

  • Open the WhatsApp application
  • Select the conversation you want to delete messages automatically
  • Click on user profile
  • Click on the disappearing messages menu
  • Select the available time option

Group Chat

  • Open the WhatsApp application
  • Go to the group you want to activate the feature
  • Click on user profile
  • Click on disappearing messages
  • Select the available time option

5. Hide WhatsApp profile photo

The profile picture feature on WhatsApp is used to identify the owner of the account. But for privacy reasons, there are some who do not use the profile picture feature.

Here’s how to hide your WA profile picture

  • Open the WhatsApp application
  • Click on the three-dot icon at the top right and then click on Settings
  • After that select the menu Account or Account
  • Click on Privacy or Privacy
  • Then select the Profile Picture or Profile Picture option
  • Please check the Nobody option. If you select the Nobody option, your profile picture will be hidden and will not be visible to all WhatsApp application users.

6. Cancel unknown numbers

Users can activate Silence Unknown Caller to reduce the blocking of unknown numbers. But WhatsApp does not make foreign numbers disappear completely, calls from unknown numbers are still visible in the call list.

Here’s how:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Click on the three dots at the top and then open Settings
  • Click Privacy
  • Select Calls to activate the Silence Unknown Caller feature
  • Then slide the toggle button towards.
