I bought a kiwi, but is it a little hard? Do you ever wonder We asked Maiko Kurita, PR Manager of Zespri International Japan Co., Ltd., about her secret trick to sweeten a hard kiwi.
How to identify edible kiwi
“Both of them contain abundant nutrients, especially vitamin C content, which is higher than that of strawberries and lemon juice, which is top class among fruits.
Neither the green kiwi nor the gold kiwi can tell the degree of maturity from the color of the skin. You can feel the elasticity of the ready-to-eat food when you gently wrap it in your hand. This is a ripe kiwi.
It’s sweetened, so put it in the fridge and save it. However, it will ripen even if it is kept in the refrigerator, so try to eat it as soon as possible.” (Mr. Kurita)
What is the trick to sweeten kiwi?
“If you feel that the kiwi is still hard, you need to ripen it.In this case, let it ripen at room temperature instead of putting it in the refrigerator. It will ripen faster than in the refrigerator.
If you want to ripen faster, put it in a plastic bag with apples and bananas and leave it at room temperature for 2-3 days.
This is because apples and bananas produce ethylene, which promotes seed germination and ripens fruits. Putting them together releases ethylene into the plastic bag, which causes the kiwi to ripen.
Check the firmness every day, and when you can feel the elasticity, put it in the refrigerator and eat it cold.” (Mr. Kurita)
If the ripening has progressed and it has become too soft, you can easily eat it by splitting it in two horizontally and scooping it with a spoon as shown in the image at the beginning.
It’s the season when the sunlight is getting stronger and UV rays are a concern. Let’s prepare for summer by eating kiwi, which is full of vitamin C, which is said to be indispensable for healthy skin.
