Solidarity is needed more than ever in times of pandemic. The socioeconomic crisis associated with the coronavirus, far from diminishing, is getting worse. The virus does not spread by itself, poverty spreads in its wake. Every day there are more households that are in dire need.
Without work and with dependent children, many families are forced to go to the door of social entities in search of food to put in their mouths. The long lines that form are already known as the hunger tails, which are getting longer and longer due to the lack of aid and the end of family savings. And it is that poverty begins to affect sectors of the population that had never before had to resort to social assistance.
Food Banks They fight to prevent many families from going hungry, but the truth is that the increase in applicants means that these solidarity organizations are overwhelmed. They can’t take it anymore, they are under minimum. Its shelves have been emptied in recent months as a result of increased demand during the first lockdown.
In the first wave it is calculated that Food Banks saw their demand increase by more than 20%, a figure that could exceed 30% in this second wave given that among those who come to demand food there are more and more people without work.
The SOS cry from the Food Banks It did not go unnoticed by the Galician food distribution company Vegalsa and its partner, the Eroski Group, who, after listening to the contributions of more than 3,500 partners, have selected the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) to launch its new program Solidarity Cents.
As the company explains, it is a permanent support program through which “customers may decide to add a few cents to their purchase and allocate that amount to the active social cause at that time.” Until January 6, the beneficiaries will be the Food Banks.
How to make a donation?
The donation can be made in each purchase that the customer makes with a card or mobile in box. Always voluntary and confidential, it is a fixed amount that changes according to the amount of the ticket. For purchases between 5 and 30 euros, it will be 10 cents and for purchases over 30 euros, it will be 20 cents.
This new program starts by helping Food Banks of Galicia and Castilla y León, so that they can provide food products to families that have been left in a vulnerable situation after the health emergency.
In total, more than 144 establishments Eroski Center, Eroski Hypermarkets and the Eroski City franchises of Vegalsa-Eroski will offer their customers the possibility of carrying out a economic contribution in favor of the Food Banks. This will not be the only contribution, as the Galician company also joins this year the Great Collection organized by FESBAL itself between November 16 and 21.
The first cause, which will last until January 6, is food
of vulnerable families after COVID-19 with the Banks of
Food; but there will be many other entities and groups who will benefit from this new solidarity program from Vegalsa-Eroski.
The entities and organizations to which the aid will be destined
They will change periodically and their choice responds to the concerns at the level of solidarity transmitted by the Client-Partners, as explained from Vegalsa-Eroski. Thus, among them, there will be for example campaigns and entities that work for children, people at risk of social exclusion, the fight against cancer and the environment.
