TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indian Center for Science and Environment (CSE) found that the majority honey which is sold in the market is not pure honey, or has been mixed with other ingredients.
According to the CSE report, a number of well-known worldwide honey brands have been mixed with syrup or sugar. Pure honey contains many nutrients but is free of fat and cholesterol. Honey is a food source that is rich in antioxidants and antibacterial properties.
However, honey that is no longer pure, aka mixed with sugar, has a negative impact on health if consumed in the long term.
Because it is high in sugar, unrefined honey tends to increase the risk of obesity and increase levels gula blood. This is evidenced from the results of several related studies.
So, how do you know if the honey you are buying is pure honey or not?
The Indianexpress website provides an easy way to tell the difference, via a test that can be done at home. This test is the method recommended by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
You only need to prepare a clear container filled with water and honey. Pour a few drops of honey into a container filled with water.
Notice the reaction of the honey. If the honey goes directly to the surface of the container without dissolving, it means it is pure honey.
Conversely, if the dripped honey seems to slowly dissolve with water, the honey has been mixed with syrup or sugar.
