How to discipline children without violence

1. Set clear rules and consequences

Even without violence, parents still need to be firm when teaching their children to be more disciplined.

This can start by setting clear rules and consequences if children break the rules.

“We need to tell children (what rules they can and cannot do). The rules must be clear,” said early childhood psychology practitioner, Aninda SPsi, MPsiT, at the Baby Huki event in Jakarta, Wednesday (7/2/2024 ).

By understanding the rules, over time the child will know where the mistakes lie which will force him to bear the consequences.

2. Encourage children to communicate

By setting clear rules and consequences, parents can communicate better with their children.

According to Aninda, millennial parents (aged 28-43 years) and also Gen Z (aged 19-27 years) are generally more open and willing to communicate, so it is easier to teach children discipline according to their age.

“Parents in the past were usually more strict, so their way of educating them was tougher,” explained Aninda.

3. Listen to the child’s feelings

Aninda also recommends parents adopt smart parenting to teach discipline.

This parenting style can be realized by listening to and understanding the child’s feelings, providing positive support, and practicing self-care.

These steps are the key to creating happiness. Not only for little ones, but also for parents.

“That’s why with smart parenting, it’s not uncommon for children to grow up to be happy (and disciplined) children because they feel their needs are being met,” he added.
