How to Disable the New Steam Update Sound and Manage Non-Critical Notifications

When Valve recently updated the Steam client and changed the look of the platform, many users were surprised, as it had become a bit of a trend for updates to arrive that had little or no noticeable effect. While the latest update has brought many welcome improvements to Steam, the little sound that now sounds when a game or update finishes downloading, or when you achieve an achievement, has left many users (myself included) wondering how they can disable this feature. Fortunately, now you can do it.

As part of a new update for Steam, Valve has introduced a way to mute and unmute non-critical notifications, meaning you can disable the update sound so it doesn’t disrupt your experience or workflow in the future.

The update also fixed audio issues with screenshots, changed the layout of the notification page, fixed the Windows overlay for some games, and even fixed news events blocking mouse and touch input on the Steam Deck.
