Infectious diseases of the liver, hepatitis B and C are caused by infection with hepatitis viruses that cause acute or chronic forms. Acute infection does not usually occur and is not life-threatening, with about 20% of patients eliminating the virus in the first 6 months after infection. After healing, the antibodies formed by the immune system following the acute infection are kept in the body.
In 80% of cases, viruses cause chronic forms that can lead to complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. Unless hepatitis B and C show no noticeable symptoms, a medical consultation is needed as soon as signs are observed such as: yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), discoloration of the stools, unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, insomnia .
