The Federal Consumer Attorney (Profeco) listed the best ways to spot a scam when it comes to vacation packages.
In the February issue of the Consumer magazine A series of tips are included to avoid being a victim of fraud when buying a vacation package, especially through the Internet.
- 1. Avoid contracting vacation packages on social networks. Today these are great platforms to find businesses and offers, but it is best to go to formal companies with their own website
- 2. Once you’re on the page, pay attention to details like it starts with “https://www” and show a lock next to the link. Pay attention because some pages impersonate recognized companies.
- 3. Even with the previous points, it can be a scam, so it is important to look for the company’s means of contact, such as telephone, email and physical address to make clarifications. When someone is interested in hiring, in general, they will receive very quick answers to their questions, but once they have the money they stop answering through WhatsApp and social networks.
- 4. Although in the digital economy there are many companies that were born and live only on the internet, a formal company requires a physical address: make sure it has it.
- 5. Be wary of overly attractive packages, with very low prices and comfortable payments, as they serve as a hook to attract victims.
- 6. Check that the agency is registered in the National Tourism Registry. To do this, enter your data on the page: https://rnt.sectur.gob.mx
- 7. Also check if the company appears in the register of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies, available at: https://www.amav.org
- 8. Check the comments and reviews of the site and social networks, so you can detect if they comply with what is offered
- 9. Avoid depositing your payment through convenience stores like OXXO or 7Eleven or to personal accounts as they leave you more vulnerable as a consumer.
- 10. Once you have contracted, confirm your reservations in hotels and airlines.
In addition to the previous points to have a vacation as you have dreamed of, check these extra points:
- – The agency must have a trade name and company name, as well as an address in national territory.
- – Before signing, check that the total amount to be paid is clear and that it is shown in pesos.
- – The contract must also specify which services are included in the vacation package.
- – Ask about the terms and conditions, as well as the cancellation and penalty options.
- – The company must have a Privacy Notice that guarantees security measures for your personal and bank data.
