How to cut flowers in a bouquet: truth and myths. Infographics | infographics

In order for the flowers to remain fresh longer, they need to be cut correctly, and also change the water in the vase daily and keep the bouquet out of direct sunlight. AIF told about it florist Polina Agafonova.

Cut the flowers as soon as you bring them home, before putting them in the water, the expert notes. And you need to do this every day, and not once, as is often done.

“If the stems of the plants are long, then cut them daily by 1 cm, if they are short, then by 0.5 cm. Cut the soft stems at a right angle, otherwise the sharp corner will crush against the bottom of the vase, and the hard ones at an angle of 45º. There are also plants whose cut needs to be further split. For example, hydrangeas. She is a real water drinker, so she needs to provide more access to moisture, ”explained the florist.

According to Agafonova, it is best to cut with a sharp knife – this is the most ideal way, secateurs are in second place. But the expert does not recommend cutting flowers with ordinary scissors. As well as listening to different advice from non-professional florists, which can only harm plants.

“Soaking flowers in the bathroom for freshness is a myth. This is acceptable for a hydrangea that loves water, or a dying rose – as a means of resuscitation. But if you start floating fresh roses in the bath and water gets inside the bud, the flower will quickly rot,” said the florist.

The expert also referred to the myths advice on adding alcohol, sugar and aspirin to the water, as well as that it is necessary to cut the stems under water.
