Instead, it is sometimes enough to concentrate on the sound output while using the iPhone for other purposes or storing it in your pocket when it is locked, for example to listen to a song on headphones. However, a paid membership to YouTube Premium is not necessarily necessary for this: with just a few simple steps on the iPhone, the above scenarios can be implemented for all users.
Continue listening to YouTube when your iPhone is locked
Many of the features that YouTube once made available to all users now require a premium subscription. If you want to use the service in the background without restrictions, you have to pay for it on your iPhone. However, if the user is content with audio playback, this is easily possible. You don’t need a user account or a third-party app for this. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Open Safari (not the YouTube app!) on iPhone, then go to YouTube on
- Search for the video whose content you want to listen to
- Tap the aA control in the address bar, then select Request Desktop Website
- Start playing the video without entering the YouTube app. You may need to watch or skip the advertisements first
- Lock the device using the side button
- On the lock screen you can continue playback with the play button, of course this also works with headphones

By the way, sometimes it is not necessary to enter the desktop website. If you want to continue using your iPhone while the YouTube video audio is playing, you can simply exit Safari. In the next step, tap the play button on the Dynamic Island or at the top right of the control center.
