Director Vija Blūzma says: “We created the show thinking that every year it is getting harder and harder to feel the festive mood and true joy of the heart. The world sets standards for who and what Christmas should be for this joy to come – how many gifts, how many beautiful lamps, how many rich tables. It is also not easy for children to understand what this holiday is really about, because each advertisement tries to offer new ideas that they want again and again during the holiday. In this show, two snowmen go in search of the joy of Christmas to those who seem to have it – but how real and lasting can be the joy you don’t share? In a simple and child-friendly way, we talk about real and true joy creeping into your heart when you open it to others and have someone to share it with. The show is intended for an age when children are naturally experiencing this slow transition from “I”, “my”, “me” to a gradually growing ability to see the needs and feelings of others as well.
In the play, actors Arnita Jaunzeme and Pēteris Galviņš play the adventures and discoveries of Margarita Stāraste’s storytellers, supplementing them with songs created by the singer Mikus Frišfelds for the needs of the show. The artist of the performance Anita Znutiņa-Šēve has created both dolls and costumes and the scenography of the production.
“The Joy of Christmas” can be seen twice in person – on December 24 and 25, but the rest of the time the show can be seen in the digital version in the Theater Hall. The sofa hall is a platform for recording theater performances, which now shows 18 productions – in both Latvian and Russian! In addition to this production, the performances “Silver Spruce”, “Winter Tale” and “Snow Queen” are also dedicated to the theme of Christmas time, which will make both the preschool and school-age children’s holidays richer.
