During the summer, when our skin sweats more and attracts dust, its proper cleansing is especially important. One of the helpers in this task is micellar waters. They are available in a wide range, but how to choose the right one for you? How to use micellar water correctly and can it be replaced with other similar products? Benu Aptiekas beauty consultant Amanda Dārziņa advises.
Functions of micellar waters
Micellar waters are designed to cleanse the skin of decorative cosmetics, daily dirt, dust and accumulated sebum. The micelles in the micellar water attract dirt, cleaning the skin and not disturbing its balance, explains beauty consultant A. Dārziņa.
The advantage of micellar waters is that they maintain the skin’s natural pH level, reduce redness and soothe, thus giving the skin a sense of comfort. Micellar waters do not disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and do not clog pores, thus ensuring effective but gentle cleansing of the skin.
Micellar water is used by moistening a cotton pad with it and cleansing the skin in the morning and evening. When cleaning the skin of the face, do not forget about the neck and décolleté area. Micellar water does not need to be rinsed off with water, but you can if you want to.
Tonic or micellar water?
Nowadays, the range of cosmetic products is very wide, so there is often confusion about which product is more suitable in a certain step of skin care and what is the order of using the products. It should be taken into account that each type of product has its own function and purpose or the result it provides, so products intended for different purposes should not be interchanged. So, for example, confusion sometimes arises as to how to use tonic and micellar water correctly and in what order. It should be remembered that these are two different products and are not interchangeable!
In order to remember the correct sequence of use of facial skin care products, it is necessary to remember that facial skin care consists of three important basic steps – cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Micellar water should be used in the first step, i.e. during skin cleansing, while tonic should be used in the second step, i.e. for skin toning. The tonic restores the skin’s natural pH level, preserves moisture in the skin and removes dead skin cells, as well as prepares it for the next step, i.e. moisturizing, explains A. Dārziņa.
If the face has been cleaned very well and the products used have coped well with their task, then the use of tonic can also be omitted, it can be an individual choice, guided by the skin’s feelings and needs. However, the next step, or moisturizing, is very important for the skin, it should not be skipped, so be sure to use a moisturizing cream, serum or other product according to the needs of your skin after cleansing and toning the skin.
How to choose the most suitable one?
Micellar waters are no longer a novelty and are available in a wide variety. How not to get confused and choose the right one for you? BENU Pharmacies beauty consultant A. Dārziņa recommends – start by evaluating your skin type: what are its needs? Cleansing of excess sebum, matting effect and shine reduction will be more relevant for oily and combination skin. For normal skin – refreshing and cleaning the skin from dust and dirt accumulated during the day. For dry skin, additional hydration, which can be provided by hyaluronic acid or other moisturizing ingredients in the product, will be especially relevant. On the other hand, sensitive skin should choose micellar waters that are suitable for it, with a soothing effect and, for example, rosacea-reducing properties. Choose products with the effect and properties your skin needs.
Also, pay attention to the composition of the product, so that the micellar water you choose does not contain ethanol and fragrances – this is especially relevant for sensitive skin. Also, pay attention to whether it is suitable for contact lens wearers, if this is relevant to you.
