how to check state and federal tax refund status – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK — One of the first important dates of the Revenue Agency calendar for the season of taxes it’s January 17thwhich is the last day taxpayers can make their estimated tax payments for 2022 if they haven’t paid the year’s income tax by withholding (or haven’t paid enough tax this way).

In addition to learning about key tax dates with the agency, many taxpayers are looking for a way to know when they will receive their state and federal tax refunds.

Here’s how you can find out where your tax refund is if you haven’t received it or want to know if you’ve already received it.

You can use the IRS tool Where is my refund?or in English Where is my refund?which now allows you to track tax refunds dating back two years.

To use the tool, you’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, marital status, and the exact amount of your intended repayment.

If you file a joint return, you must record the identification number that appears first on the return.

Most states also require you to provide the exact refund amount. Some states require the taxpayer to round the figure to the nearest amount, but some states, such as Vermont, require the exact amount.

Other states may also require your date of birth, filing year, marital status, and even your zip code.

HOW IS THE PROCESS

use the tool Where is my refund? or the mobile application IRS2Go to check your refund online. These systems are updated once every 24 hours and are the fastest and easiest way to track your refund.

You can call the Revenue Agency at no 800-829-8954 or al 1-800-829-1040 to check the status of the refund. Wait times to speak to a representative can be long. But you can avoid the wait by using the automated phone system. Follow the instructions in the message when you call.

Refunds are usually issued within 21 days if you filed your tax return electronically, or within 42 days if you filed your tax return on paper. If more time has passed, check the reasons why Your refund may be late or you haven’t received a check for the amount you expected.

The tracker shows progress through three stages:

  1. Declaration received
  2. refund approved
  3. refund sent

Where is my refund? It will show you the refund status for the selected tax year. If you need information on another statement, see your online account.

How long does it take for the refund to arrive?

¿where is my refund? provides a custom date after the return is processed and the refund is approved. While most tax refunds are issued within 21 days, some can take longer if the return requires further review.

Here are some reasons why a tax refund might take longer:

  • The return may contain errors or be incomplete.
  • The return may be affected by identity theft or fraud.
  • Many banks do not process payments on weekends or public holidays.
  • The IRS will contact taxpayers by mail if additional information is needed to process your tax return.
