Not everyone knows how close they are to losing the “note” – until they receive a personal warning letter from the police. But you can also check yourself if you are in the danger zone.

If you get eight dots on your driving license within three years, you lose the right to drive a motor vehicle for six months. If you are in doubt about how many dots you have, you can check it yourself.

On politiet.no can you monitor whether you are in the risk zone of losing your driving licence. To access the new app, you must log in via electronic identification.

Traffic offenses that can result in one or more points are:

* violation of the speed limit

* driving against a red light

* illegal overtaking

* violation of the duty to give way

* driving in a restricted area

* driving with too little distance to the car in front

* driving with a trimmed motorcycle or moped

* not to insure passengers under the age of 15

* use of a mobile phone

If you use a mobile phone in a car: a fine of NOK 9,700

All of the offenses also include fines. The rates have increased significantly in recent years. Mobile phone use in the car currently costs you NOK 9,700. Four years ago, the rate was NOK 1,700.

If you drive 36-40 kilometers per hour too fast on roads with a speed limit of kilometers per hour, you have to pay NOK 15,100.

If you run a red light, the fine is NOK 9,700.

If you break the rules on signs about no entry, no turning, prescribed direction of travel, prescribed lane, public transport lane, one-way street or pedestrian street, the fine is NOK 7,800.

– It is something we are constantly asked about

According to the police, you will receive a warning letter if you are registered with at least four dots. The letter is a reminder that you must change your driving behavior in order not to lose your driving licence.

You cannot complain that you have received dots.

– Many people wonder how many dots they have, and not least when the date on the oldest dots expires. It’s something we constantly get asked about, says district leader Are Medby for UP in Northern Norway Northern Lights.

You can also turn up in person at a police station to check how many dots you have.

Will impound cars

Norwegian police want to have the authority to seize and auction off vehicles involved in serious speeding offences.

I Denmark around 2,000 vehicles were seized in the two years after the tightening of the legislation was adopted. The rules mean that the police can impound the driver’s vehicle on the spot.

I think the fines are high enough

In Norway, the Attorney General has warned against increasing the fine rates as they believe it will have a preventive effect.

– Increasing drivers’ knowledge of the existing level of fines should be considered as an alternative measure to increased fine rates, the Attorney General wrote in a consultation response on the case in December 2022

The Ministry of Transport nevertheless received approval to increase simplified orders in traffic cases by 30 per cent.
