Mexico.- The hot season has arrived, yet still waiting temperatures at a higherconcerned about the health of the pets that are in our care, and considering that many of them spend most of their time outside, here we tell you how you should protect them.
The Fort Worth Animal Shelter reminds pet owners keep an eye out for animals that may be struggling with the extreme heat.
In extremely high temperatures, an animal will have difficulty losing excess body heat through evaporation. The situation worsens if the humidity is high or there is no breeze. Telltale signs of heat stress: panting, increased rate of breathing, increased alcohol consumption, loss of appetite, and lethargy.
Here are some important hot weather tips to keep pets healthy:
- Never leave your animal alone in a vehicle. It can become an oven within 15 minutes inside the vehicle. Temperatures can range from 131 to 172 degrees.
- Dogs and cats need cool, shaded places during hot weather with plenty of clean, fresh water accessible at all times.
- Try to feed the animals in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler.
- Try to take your dog for a walk in the early morning or evening rather than during the heat of the day.
- Protect your dog’s paws by walking on grass or other cooler surfaces. A dog’s paws can easily burn.
