Jobat Anyone who has successfully asked for a pay raise may be quite disappointed when they see the next pay slip. There is a big difference between the gross and net amount of your higher salary. Jobat.be calculates how much more gross salary you need to ask to have a net 100 euros left and zooms in on some – more fiscally interesting – alternatives.
As a full-time employee, dozens of percentages of your gross salary go to the tax authorities and RSZ every month. You pay 13.07 percent personal social security contributions on your gross salary. How much withholding tax and therefore taxes you have to pay depends, among other things, on your family situation and total income. Employers donate another 35 percent of employer contributions, which means that the wage costs for the employer are often double what the employee retains net.
Making a simulation from gross to net depends on several factors, which can significantly influence matters. Just think about the composition of your family – with or without children and/or married or not – and your fringe benefits. Below is an example of a standard clerk:
• Single Bianca has been working full-time as a clerk for several years. She would like to earn 100 euros more.
• Bianca earns 3,881 euros gross monthly, the average salary of the Belgian according to the most recent Jobat Salary Compass. Of this, 2,476 euros net appears in her account.
• If she wants to go to 2,576 euros net, then Bianca’s wage must increase to 4,124 euros gross. So she must ask for a gross surcharge of 243 euros.

Extra-legal conditions
As the simulation above shows, you have to ask for quite a bit of a markup before you see a nice difference in your bank account. It therefore takes some courage, not least because many employers have already had to significantly increase wages in the past period due to high inflation.
Perhaps you both would benefit more from fringe benefits? For example, meal vouchers have an employee contribution of at least 1.09 euros per check to be social security and tax free. In a month with 20 working days, this amounts to 21.80 euros deducted from your net salary. However, the employee contribution, plus the employer contribution, does appear on the meal voucher and is therefore not ‘lost’. You can do your shopping with it. In return, you will soon receive checks for at least 100 euros. Read all about meal vouchers and how they boost your purchasing power here.
Group insurance
Depending on the plan, group insurance can sometimes include an employee contribution. This sum is then deducted from the net salary and deposited into the pension plan. Together with the employer’s contribution, your contribution will fuel your second-pillar pension as an employee. Not nice to have to compromise in the short term, but here too it is not a loss. It is a kind of savings product that increases your statutory pension. A form of deferred salary.
Cost reimbursement
Finally, the cost reimbursement is also interesting. For example, if you receive 200 euros in expenses, that amount will be fully added to your net salary, without subsequent deduction. And then there are a lot of benefits that are difficult to express in terms of cents, such as extra-legal vacation days and career opportunities. So always look further than just the difference between gross and net.
