It is perfectly normal to feel nervous before a job interview. There’ll be a lot going through your mind, from trying to craft the perfect answer to worrying whether you’re setting a good impression. However, the people interviewing you want to see that you’re confident and capable. There are lots of things you can do to boost yourself up before your next job interview.
Right Outfit
You want to dress the part. Even if the interview is happening online, you still want to create a good visual impression. Your clothes can help boost your confidence. Pick an outfit that makes you feel good and you feel comfortable wearing. For instance, women’s tops in just the right cut, or perhaps a blazer which always helps you feel professional. You’ll know what works for you. It’s better to be overdressed than under.
Do Research
One of the worst things you can feel before an interview is unprepared. It does nothing to help with nerves so to combat this, make sure to do your research. Take time exploring the company’s website. Check out their social media pages, if they have any. Before going into that interview, you should have a firm understanding of what the company does and what’s important to them.
Practise Answers
You can use this knowledge to practise your answers. Look at the job advert and see if you predict some questions they’ll ask. Does it say problem-solving, or project management? Think of examples where you’ve demonstrated the skills they’re looking for. Planning answers beforehand can help you feel less nervous and should stop you from getting flustered during the interview.
Talk Slowly
When you’re practising answers, be sure to actually say them aloud rather than just have notes. If you like, practise with a friend or family member asking you questions. This way you can adjust your speaking style. When you’re nervous, you may notice yourself talking much faster than normal. While it’s great to think of answers quickly, don’t be afraid to pause in an interview. Don’t rush yourself.
Positive Reminder
Remember, the company wouldn’t have asked you for an interview if they didn’t see potential in your CV. The questions they’re asking are not there to trip you up. They want to find out more about you and see if you’re right for them. An interview is not one-sided. You want to know if they’re right for you. Have questions prepared to ask them at the end. Not only will it show confidence, but it will show genuine interest.
Don’t let your nerves get the better of you before a job interview. Do your research, dress the part, and remember you wouldn’t be there if they weren’t interested. How do you feel confident before a job interview?
