“It is essential to understand that this is a war effort and that it consists in staying at home and having the minimum of activities outside”, he insists.
New York is a “counter-example”, he argues during an interview with Paul Larocque at 100% Nouvelles.
The situation in the hospital complex of which he is the chief resident doctor has worsened in the last week. If they were 400 last week with COVID-19, they are now more than 800 at the State University of New York Downstate Medical. “The patients arrive very sick”, he worries.
In addition, the shortages of protective equipment are severely felt in the establishment. “We save everything, so as to ration our equipment. The famous N95 masks, we pass them under an ultraviolet lamp to reuse them for a week ”, illustrates the doctor.
With its rapid screening and its health system that is resisting the wave of new cases for the moment, Dr. Cavanagh believes that Quebec is doing well. “You are still able to offer patients who present themselves the maximum quality of care”, he illustrates. Collaboration between the provinces and the federal government would also have a lot to do with it, unlike the United States where no “unified federal policy sets the tone for all 50 states,” he said.
“The only way to slow down is to confine yourself,” he recalls, insisting in his advice to Quebecers.
