How helpful these bonuses are, however, is debatable. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research in October came to the conclusion that financial incentives do not increase the willingness to vaccinate in the population.
That is why New York also relies on the stick in addition to the carrot. Unvaccinated people have had a hard time in the city since mid-August. Many activities that take place in closed rooms are simply no longer noticeable to them. Restaurants, coffee shops, fitness studios and cinemas, for example, are only allowed to be entered with proof of vaccination. That motivates – and distinguishes Gotham from large parts of the country, in which indirect vaccination requirements are now partly prohibited by law. Very many in the USA do not want to go the New York route.
