The connectivity provider has published interesting statistics.
- The largest data flow on the RTVS website occurred during the hockey semifinal – 354 Gbit / s.
- Most data was transferred during the match with USA – 461.37 TB. When it came to the final participation with Finland, it was “only” 269.87 TB.
- The spectators also took part in biathlon and favorite hockey matches via the Internet, and they also took part in the opening ceremony in large numbers.
- The telecommunications company has not specifically increased its data transmission capacity and will not be reduced even after the Olympics.
During the Winter Olympics, the volume of the internet stream of the RTVS Šport television channel was 1,350 percent higher than the other public telephony stations combined.
Together, viewers transmitted 2.2 PB (petabytes, one million gigabytes) of data for the duration of the sporting event, representing more than 900,000 hours of television broadcasts.
This was calculated by the telecommunications operator Swan, which provides RTVS with Internet connectivity for sports television broadcasts.
Most data when the quarterfinals were played
The most watched broadcast from the Olympics on the RTVS website was Slovakia’s semi-final hockey match with Finland. At one point, more than 131,000 unique visitors watched him in this way. At one point, the operator recorded data traffic at the level of 354 Gbit / s, but other transmissions are included in the number, not only the RTVS Šport station.
If we do not count hockey, it attracted the most attention skier Petra Vlhová. The second round of Petra’s winning slalom was won by almost 56,000 users via the internet channel. In comparison with hockey, the maximum data flow of RTVS at that time was 162 Gbit / s.
Most data ran on the day of the winner quarterfinal match of Slovak hockey players with the USA team – the total data volume reached 461.37 TB and a maximum of 321 Gbit / s was transmitted. More than 117,000 people have fought online.

The last third more than a million just through TV
Bronze medal match with Sweden brought a maximum data flow of 313 Gbit / s with more than 105,000 fans on the web.
The timing was signed under a smaller number – while the semifinals were played in the morning, when many people go to work or school, the last meeting of the Slovak national team was over the weekend in the afternoon. Then more people can turn on the classic linear broadcast at their provider and not watch through the web.
936,000 viewers from the group paid “reparations” on television and the last third was watched by 1.096 million sports fans, stated public media. The RTVS website recorded almost 370,000 views.

In addition to Slovak hockey representatives and skier Petra Vlhová, spectators on the Internet were also interested in:
- biathlon race, where Slovakia achieved the best results in the performance of Paulina Fialkova
- hockey matches of favored teams such as Russia, Canada, Sweden or the Czech Republic

It is worth noting that the early Olympic hockey finals between Russia and Finland did not make it into the top 20 webcasts at all.
Load lines counted for a long time
During the Olympics, the record of overall connectivity at the SIX peering node was also broken, where operators exchange data connectivity. So far maximum 431 Gbit / s moved to 466 Gbit / sduring Saturday ‘s meeting between Slovakia and Sweden.
Swan added for Živé.sk that the platform for the RTVS.sk service is designed and built “very robust” and such a load was expected in the future.
“Therefore, the solution is permanent and after the end of the Olympic Games, it will not be downgraded or its capacity and performance reduced,” spokesman Pavel Ďurík wrote.
During the Olympics, the company strengthened the supervision and support of the operation of its servers. “Both from our monitoring center and from system subcontractors, in order to ensure maximum availability and quality of services for all users,” commented the company representative.
