How the people of Jelgava helped the police to detain the robber “on hot feet”

Thanks to the attentive population, the police managed to detain a man “on a hot foot” on Monday, who, using violence, robbed a young man of a mobile phone, Dace Kalniņa, a representative of the Zemgale Regional Office of the State Police, informed LETA.

She explained that on Monday, a man born in 1995 at the intersection of Ausekļa and Pulkveža Brieža streets, using violence, robbed a mobile phone of a person born in 2001, which was damaged as a result of robbery. The young man’s optical glasses and electronic cigarette are also damaged. In total, the young person suffered material damage in the amount of 405 euros.

The crime was seen by two men who immediately followed the robber by car, caught him, stopped him and called the police. Officials from the Jelgava police station detained the 24-year-old man near the crime scene.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the police in accordance with Section 176, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law on robbery. Such an offense is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine with or without confiscation of property and probation for up to three years.

In order to prevent the possibility of evading the investigation and obstructing the establishment of the truth in the criminal proceedings, a security measure – arrest – was applied to the man detained today.

The police thank the eyewitnesses, who did not confuse the situation, but selflessly helped the young person in distress.
