How the parties fared in the 2024 elections in Liguria

Genoa, 28 October 2024 – While the counting of the ballots for the election of the new president of the Liguria region is still underway, with a tight head-to-head between the two main candidates: the mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci for the center-right and the former minister Andrea Orlando for the center-left, the positions of the parties are starting to take shape.

Based on the latest projection of the Consorzio Opinio Italia for Rai, the coalition in support of the centre-right candidate Marco Bucci is at 48.4% while that in support of the broad candidate Andrea Orlando is at 47.6%.

The other candidates are at 3.5%

A heart-pounding affair with a close head-to-head match up until the end, although Marco Bucci had an advantage in projections. The only data that emerge clearly immediately are those relating to the performance of the parties. In the coalition that supports the center-left candidate Andrea Orlando, the important result of the Democratic Party: the Dems are at 28.7%establishing itself as by far the leading party in the region and almost doubling FdI. Remarkable percentages but perhaps not enough to grab the victory. If the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra would be above 6%, the performance of the 5 Star Movement would not be as positive.

Giuseppe Conte’s party is far below expectations (5%). When the 5 Stars vetoed the list with IV, Più Europa and Socialisti, at home the decision was not to destroy the alliance with the Five Star Movement, given that in the European elections the Movement had reached over 10%. A percentage that comes out halved from the Liguria regionals. And which could be at the center of careful analysis within the coalition, after Conte’s veto on Renzi. But that’s another story. Certainly if the centre-left were to miss the mark despite the judicial investigation and the consequent resignation of Giovanni Toti which seemed to have opened up prairies, the repercussions would be inevitable.

In the centre-right the Giorgia Meloni’s party leads the coalition with 14.7%, in second place is the civic list that supports Bucci “Vince Liguria”, which fills up with preferences and comes close to 10%, leading the coalition. The League follows at 8.45% and Forza Italia at 7.8%. In the centre-left, on the contrary, the civic “Orlando Presidente” stops at 5.1%, despite the excellent result of the Democratic Party, a party of which Orlando has been a member of parliament for five legislatures and has been minister several times.
