The NATO summit in Vilnius ends on July 12, 2023. On the second day, members of the alliance made a number of important statements regarding Ukraine, Russia and China. We summarize the main results and analyze the opinions.
Why Ukraine was not accepted into NATO
The second day of the summit began with a consolation ritual for Volodymyr Zelensky, whom Western leaders had so disappointed the previous day by refusing to immediately invite Ukraine to the alliance.
Outwardly, everything looked pretentious. Among the extras gathered in the city square, chanting cheers in honor of the Kyiv guest, Lithuanian President Nauseda personally raised the yellow and black flag of Independence on the high pylon. Then, melted by such an atmosphere, Zelensky was taken to meetings with NATO leadership. There they assured him that they will continue to support Ukraine with money and weapons, the main thing is that Kiev in no case weakens military actions, no matter what the cost. Well, membership in the bloc, they say, is bound to happen. But later, sometime later…
At a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Zelensky stated with a fake tortured smile that, despite everything, he was satisfied with the results of the meeting. Although yesterday he called “absurd” the attitude of the members of the alliance to dictate to Ukraine some conditions for joining it without announcing specific dates.
And Stoltenberg repeated word for word what was already recorded in the summit communique. Namely: the issue of Ukraine’s admission to NATO can be put on a practical plane only after the end of the hostilities, in which the Independent must necessarily win.
To sweeten the pill, the G7 countries on the sidelines of the summit agreed on general principles for providing security guarantees to Ukraine. These include supplies of “advanced military equipment for use on land, air and sea”training Ukrainian forces, intelligence sharing and cyber defense assistance. But in return, Kiev is required to carry out reforms, including changes to the judiciary and civilian control of the armed forces.
But these guarantees will not at all ensure Ukraine’s rapid accession to NATO. Whether Ukraine is ready to be accepted into the bloc will have to be decided by consensus of all NATO members. And among them, even now, there are many who doubt whether the alliance is moving in the right direction.
A split between allies
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán addressed his compatriots from Vilnius with a televised address.
– Instead of sending weapons to Ukraine, we should achieve peace. A ceasefire and the start of peace talks are needed as soon as possible, Orbán said. – NATO is a defensive alliance, it was created to protect its member countries, not to conduct military operations on the territory of other countries.
This clearly contradicts the position of Stoltenberg himself, who in Vilnius simply stated that “arms supplies to Ukraine are more important than NATO’s security guarantees”. So to speak, you fight, and then we will shake your hands.
But here too there is no agreement between the allies. Everyone knows that one of the main Western hawks is the head of the British Ministry of Defence, Ben Wallace. And he suddenly indignantly told the Guardian newspaper that when he arrived in Kiev last year, he was given a huge list of weapons that the Ukrainians wanted from London. “You know, we’re not Amazon,” the minister brought them back to earth. Mind you, this was a year ago, but Wallace remembered it right now, during the NATO summit. Not for anything else, but to silence the stubborn Zelensky.
And another unpleasant event for Kiev happened today: Germany terminated the agreement with Poland to repair the Leopard tanks transferred to Ukraine. The Poles tried to wring out a painfully high price for their services. Such is the unity of the allies in the bloc. The question of who will now repair the wrecked German tanks (which are becoming more and more every day) hangs in the air.
The Chinese question
Stoltenberg’s press conference with Zelensky was just coming to an end, and Ukrainian flags had already been taken down from prominent places in Vilnius. The leaders of a number of countries from the Asia-Pacific region invited to the meeting flocked to the Lithuanian capital: Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. They were called amid collective Western concerns about China, which it says may use force to resolve the Taiwan issue.
In the final declaration of the summit of the alliance, quite a lot of attention was given to China. The document notes that NATO countries are concerned about China’s nuclear arsenal build-up and, they say, Beijing’s lack of nuclear arms control efforts. The statement also argued that the deepening of the strategic partnership between China and Russia is contrary to NATO’s values and interests.
It seems that NATO members have finally lost their regional shores and are now openly claiming the role of global gendarme.
As expected, China reacted immediately and angrily.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbing called on NATO “immediately stop distorting the truth and slandering China, fabricating false fictions, not making excuses for its own expansion, but playing a constructive role for global peace and stability.”
In his words, the final declaration of the NATO Summit in Vilnius “calls black white” and is fulfilled with “Cold War mentality and ideological prejudice”.
Conclusions of the NATO summit in Vilnius on 12 July 2023
The main result of the meeting is that the West openly showed the world community its intention to manage the political processes of the planet, in accordance with certain rules invented by itself. And those who do not agree with this, he is ready to threaten with force with the help of NATO, which swells and swells even more.
Well, good, but be careful not to crack their cheeks. They inflate them too much.
