How the miracle city of Erzin did not suffer in the earthquakes in Turkey

Turkey is focusing its efforts on dealing with the expected humanitarian and health crisis, and rescue operations remain on the back burner. In our southern neighbor, they are already struggling with disinformation and spreading panic among the population. Against this background, three women were rescued ten days after the earthquake.

The city of Erzin is in the most affected province of Hatay. It is located not far from the epicenter of the devastating earthquake. Life in the city with about 40,000 inhabitants is dynamic. They call it the city of miracle – without victims and destruction. However, this does not mean that the earthquake was not felt there in full force.

28-year-old Yumut Chirak and his parents have a hotel that is six stories high. Such buildings in Erzin are rare. “Three or four years ago, the city administration banned the construction of buildings over four floors, so we don’t have many tall buildings. And I think this is the reason why there are no completely destroyed buildings after the earthquake”, said Jumut Chirak.

The tallest buildings in Erzin are the minarets of the mosques, he informed NOVA. The cubes of two of them are partially destroyed. The residents of Erzin also say that the authorities do not make compromises when issuing construction permits and the control is increased.

Due to the uproar about Erzin being the city of miracles, the mayor refused to comment on the subject, but did not prevent our team on the ground from photographing the obvious – there is no fallen building in the city.
